Calgary Library workers reluctantly accept settlement

CALGARY — Calgary Public Library Workers, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1169, have reluctantly voted to accept a mediator’s recommendations for a collective agreement.

The deal provides for a wage increase of 10% over three years.

“While the contract has been ratified, we have notified our employer that the support for the settlement was not overwhelming”, said Rh’ena Oake, President of CUPE Local 1169.   “We had a large turnout and there was a significant discontent voiced by the members and reflected in the large numbers who voted to reject the settlement.”

Oake said members feel the board needs to pay higher wages, and improve working conditions or risk losing experienced staff.

“This should be a wake-up call to the Library Board,” said Oake.  “It’s time for the employer to address the low morale of library workers in the system and we hope they are up to the challenge.”

The settlement was accepted by 63% of CUPE members. A previous settlement had been rejected by CUPE members.
