CALGARY – The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is spearheading a national campaign to raise awareness about the state of residential long-term care across Canada, with stops across the country.
As part of the campaign, CUPE is hosting a public event in Calgary this Monday, September 25th at the Radisson Hotel, 2120 – 16 Ave NE.
Guest speaker Dr. Pat Armstrong is a Sociology Professor at York University. She has co-authored a large number of articles and books on health policy, with considerable focus on long-term care. Armstrong’s research has shown chronic understaffing in Canadian long-term care facilities, resulting in work environments that are often unhealthy and unsafe for staff and seniors.
CUPE Researcher Bonnie Ferguson will also discuss new research on Canadian residential long-term care.
A new report, entitled Residential Long-Term Care in Canada: Our Vision for Better Seniors’ Care finds a long-term care system in crisis. Severe underfunding and privatization have created serious access and quality problems. The result is clear – our elders are not getting the care they need and deserve.
