Gardens employees join CUPE

GRANDE PRAIRIE – Thirty-four employees of “The Gardens” a local designated assisted living facility, have voted 75% in favour of joining the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

CUPE Alberta President Marle Roberts said the employees came to the union seeking better wages, working conditions and equitable treatment for overtime.

“Across Alberta, people who care for our elderly are among some of the worst paid, most poorly treated employees in the province,” said Roberts.  “It’s no surprise that this group voted strongly in favour of joining a union – there is a lot of work to do to make their workplace better.”

CUPE is the largest union in Canada with over 615,000 members.  The union has 32,000 members in Alberta.
