LETHBRIDGE – While civic workers were held to 2% wage increases, Lethbridge’s Mayor and Council voted themselves raises of up to 20%. That has CUPE Local 70 President Chris Ingold crying foul.
“The men and women who make this city run were told by council to accept a wage increase lower than most municipal workers across the province,” said Ingold. “In the meantime, they claim market adjustments and vote themselves big raises.”
Ingold rejected the explanation that an independent report recommended a raise for Lethbridge’s politicians, saying no such study was done for Local 70 workers, and a market adjustment that was done for another union, Alberta Transit Union, was rejected by the City.
“We asked for market comparators for the work we do, and the City rejected it,” said Ingold. “The Access A Ride employees have an outstanding market adjustment from 2011 that the City won’t acknowledge. Our members are expected to take wage increases far below what the council has voted for themselves.”
“Our city employees work just as hard as the council in providing excellent service to the citizens of Lethbridge.”
“We’re not asking for anything unfair – we’ll leave that to the council to do.”
