Union launches annual ‘sock it to em’ campaign

School staff collect clothes for charity

LETHBRIDGE – Sock Mountain will rise again.

For the fourth year in a row, employees of Lethbridge and area schools are sponsoring a sock drive for local charities.

The initiative, sponsored by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 290, draws in activity by school staff, parents, students and members of the public.

Organizers Gail Petrie and Noel Covey say the campaign has been gaining momentum over the years.

“Over the last three years, we collected over 9,000 pairs of socks for five local charities,” said Petrie.  “It’s been really heartening to see the public get on board.”

‘Sock Mountain’ is the collection of socks collected by the drive.  It will be unveiled in December.

Covey said members of the public can drop off socks at local schools until December 15th.
