School custodians at Black Gold get wage increase

LEDUC – School custodians at the Black Gold School Region will go back to work this month with wage increase in the range of a $1.00/hour.

The 63 employees, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 474, ratified the wage increase in December.

CUPE 474 President Doug Luellman said the increase is the first step in a two-stage process to raise wages this year.  On September 1st, the custodians will receive a further 2.5% increase.

“Since this group joined CUPE in February of 2005, we’ve been able to increase their wages by over 30%,” said Luellman.  “This is further evidence of the positive impact that unions can have on the lives of working people.”

The increases come as part of a negotiated wage ‘re-opener’ to the collective agreement.  CUPE and the School Region have a contract in place until August 31, 2008.
