Meet Alberta Youth Delegates to CUPE Young Workers Strategy Session

Crystal Chan and Cesar Agudelo will both be attending All-in, Our union, Our future, a young workers strategy session, on behalf of their Local 4731.  The strategy session will bring together members and staff aged 30 and younger to develop a vision for CUPE to defend and enhance the rights of the next generation of workers.

Youth Delegates

Both Crystal and Cesar work at the Calgary Workers’ Resource Centre, a charitable, non-profit organization that provides representation and advocacy for workers who have employment related issues including Employment Insurance, Employment Standards, Human Rights, Workers’ Compensation, and Canada Pension Plan Disability. Crystal works as a Case Worker and Cesar as the Intake Coordinator.

Conservative dominated Senate says no to Bill C-377

Ottawa – In a stunning move, the Conservative dominated Senate has blocked Bill C-377, the so called union disclosure bill, from becoming law by passing a series of amendments that force the bill back to the House of Commons.

The Senate voted 49-33 to support changes to the bill proposed by Conservative Senator Hugh Segal. More than a dozen Conservative Senators voted with Segal, clearly illustrating the flawed nature of the bill.

City workers going the extra mile during flood

CALGARY – The leadership of three local unions representing City of Calgary employees thanked their members today for their hard work during the current flood crisis.

The Presidents of Locals 37, 38 and 709 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) said their members have been working around the clock to keep Calgarians safe, and to help them in any way possible.

CUPE 37 President Don Monroe said many city employees are working 20 hour days.  “Our members are rising to the call, the community needs them, and they are there. Without everyone doing their part – the crisis could be a lot worse.”
