EDMONTON – The annual convention of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, (CUPE) Alberta Division, opens in Fort McMurray next week.
Over 150 delegates, representing 30,000 CUPE members province wide, will convene at the Sawridge Hotel and Conference Centre March 23 to 25.
CUPE Alberta President D’Arcy Lanovaz said that in addition to the usual convention business and guest speakers, there will be a lot of debate and discussion around health care reforms being proposed by the provincial government.
“The Klein government is proposing reforms that will allow the rich to take out their credit cards and lure doctors and nurses away from the public health care system,” said Lanovaz. “That is something that CUPE members are very fearful of, and we will be discussing ways to convince the government to back down.”
Convention speakers include Alberta NDP leader Brian Mason, CUPE National President Paul Moist, Journalist Marc Lisac, and Alberta Federation of Labour President Gil McGowan.
