“Sock Mountain” rises again to assist local charities

Local school communities collect socks for five area organizations

LETHBRIDGE – For the 8th year in a row, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has spearheaded an effort to collect warm socks for local charities.

Gail Petrie, a retired member of CUPE Local 290, has spearheaded the drive, which has collected almost 36,000 socks in previous years.  The socks are collected by staff, students and parents in the schools of three local school districts.

Petrie says the socks are given to five local charities, the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Harbour House, Wood Homes (Teen Shelter) and the Homeless Shelter.

“Sock Mountain” will be available for photographs as CUPE 290 presents the haul to the charities this Wednesday.
