Women’s shelter employees join CUPE

SHERWOOD PARK – Twenty-one employees of the Strathcona Women’s shelter have voted 75% in favour of joining the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

The employees joined the union to address concerns with wages, benefits, working conditions and job security.

CUPE Alberta President Marle Roberts said that by joining Canada’s largest union, the employees will have a stronger hand in improving their working conditions.

“CUPE will provide professional bargaining assistance, research and legal advice to these employees that is second to none,” said Roberts.  “They will join a network of other social services employees from across the country and who will have their backs in every way.”

CUPE also represents employees at women’s shelters in Edmonton, Camrose and Calgary.
