Welcoming new members to the CUPE family

Calgary – School Support workers of East Central Alberta Catholic Separate Schools Regional Division No. 16 have successfully voted to select the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE ), Local 5606 to be their certified bargaining agent. While employees previously belonged to an internal association, they collectively decided that they needed the support of the union.

CUPE Alberta President Marle Roberts said, “Unions in general, but specifically CUPE, provides employees with a sense of solidarity. Knowing that they are not in this alone provides people with peace of mind.”

“We are always thrilled when a local decides to join CUPE,” Roberts said.  “At CUPE, we are a family of 627,000 members.”

Local 5606 will now work on building their local union by recruiting and training activists in preparation of the collective bargaining process.
