CUPE meets with Local Authorities Pension Plan stakeholders

For the first time since November, CUPE representatives met with other unions, employers, LAPP representatives and government earlier this week to discuss the future of the Local Authorities Pension Plan.

CUPE and other unions present presented a united front that our first priority is to defend and protect the interests of our members and retirees, and that means protecting our retirement security from attempts to reduce pension benefits.

We also indicated that we would not support recommendations to change the pension plan without becoming full partners with employers. Acting in an ‘advisory’ capacity isn’t good enough when the stability of our retirement income is on the table.  It should not be possible for one person (the Minister of Finance) to change pension benefits with the wave of a pen.

The LAPP board of trustees will meet on Friday March 15th and make final recommendations to the Minister of Finance.  We will keep you posted on those recommendations as soon as we have more news to report.
